CONNEMARA GALWAY IRELAND

Connemara is that rugged portion in the West of Ireland which is bounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the last unspoilt regions of Europe. Though relatively small it consists of almost every geological feature, from the Majestic Twelve Pins Mountains to the East, through meandering rivers, horseshoe lakes, extensive stretches of rugged mooreland, protected boglands, National Parks and scenic valleys.

The shoreline of Connemara, though only 300 miles long, embraces some of the most clean, unpolluted beaches, both sand and coral, quiet undiscovered walkways, craggy rocks and challenging cliffs for the daring outdoor enthusiast. Probably its most striking feature is the abundance of off-shore islands, many now uninhabited but accessible daily for island-hopping expeditions.

The Connemara skies are dominated by over fifty magnificent mountains in four tightly packed ranges, the Twelve Bens, Maum Turks, Partry and Sheffrey. The mountains, though only two thousand feet in average height have been described as the ‘Alps in Miniature’.

Connemara National Park is a must see for visitors to the area. The park is watched over by its own mountain, Diamond Hill. With two-self-guided nature tours, a picnic area, audio visual show, and a great exhibition on Connemara’s Landscape, it’s a great day out for all.

Inishbofin Island is a beautiful island with a superb natural harbour. It's a magical place of low heather-covered hills, craggy cliffs and exquisite turquoise beaches.

Take a leisurely drive or cycle to the coastal fishing village of Roundstone which was established in the 1820’s. A Franciscan Monastery was established here in the 1830’s but all that now remains of the monastery are the gateway entrance and church tower.

As well as cafes, pubs and bars you will find craft shops, art galleries and the Roundstone Musical Instruments workshop.

The Sky Road is also a must. It takes you among the hills overlooking Clifden Bay and its offshore islands. It is a circular route which you can see by car, cycling or walking.

And then there's Connemara Golf Club on the edge of Europe. This awesomely picturesque 72 par course with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean measures 7,000 yards. ‘If there were a course like this on the west coast of England it would surely host the British Open’ wrote Peter Alliss, golf writer and BBC commentator. Tom Watson said of Connemara Golf Club, ‘A true Championship Links Course … The elevated greens on the back nine are spectacular.’
